The Evolution of an Artist | Patricia Skelton

Long before Open Window Restore became what it is today, my creative journey began with a love of painting, old furniture, and the possibilities hidden within forgotten pieces.

For years, painting was my creative escape. I found joy in transforming ordinary furniture and decorative objects into something personal, often incorporating hand-painted florals, birds, butterflies, and intricate decorative details.

Each piece offered a new opportunity to experiment with color, composition, and the character of an aged surface.

The Early Years: Painting by Hand

Some of my earlier pieces featured colorful folk-art motifs, delicate floral designs, and whimsical birds. From hand-painted tables to cabinets and everyday household objects, I enjoyed finding beauty in unexpected places.

These projects required patience, imagination, and many hours of detailed brushwork.

Looking back, I can see how those early experiences shaped my understanding of color, balance, and decorative artistry.

Discovering the Beauty of Patina

As my artistic interests evolved, I became increasingly drawn to the character of timeworn surfaces.

The softened colors of antique furniture, weathered architectural details, and the layered finishes found in European interiors became a new source of inspiration.

My work gradually moved toward textured surfaces, subtle variations in color, and finishes that suggest a piece has been cherished for generations.

The Art Continues

Today, through Open Window Restore, I continue exploring the relationship between artistry, texture, and time.

My work includes decorative finishes, architectural-inspired artwork, restored objects, and original designs for creative projects.

Although my techniques have evolved, my inspiration remains much the same: discovering potential in the overlooked and creating pieces with character, history, and individuality.

These earlier works are part of that journey. Some have found new homes, while others remain reminders of the many creative paths that brought me here.

Thank you for exploring this little piece of my artistic history.
